(What Warning Lights Mean)Posted November 30, 2025 1:23 AMYou may have noticed when you start your vehicle, you’ll see several symbols light up on the dash. They’re different colors and shapes, and sometimes it’s hard to figure out what each of those symbols mean. They are warning lights and symbolize something in your vehicle is sending you a message. It’s the result of today’s vehicles having lots of computers. The good thing about having so many of these warning lights is they can let you know there’s an issue in need of attention before a more serious failure. Sometimes it can be challenging to figure out what each light means, so here are some of the most common ones. One looks like your vehicle’s engine from the side, the Check Engine light. It alerts you to something as simple as a loose gas cap to a far more serious problem like an overheating engine. When the Check Engine light comes on, bring it into our shop. If it’s blinking or flashing, it likely has more urgent issues, so bring it in sooner. Another warning light looks like a genie lamp with a drip at the end, and it’s the engine oil light. When it comes on, it means something’s wrong with the oil pressure, and that can be a sign of serious engine problems. Don’t ignore the oil light and bring it in for service as soon as you can. One warning light looks like an old-style thermometer with a bulb at the bottom and degree marks on the side sitting in fluid. That’s all about your coolant level, and when it comes on, your engine may be overheating. It’s another one that’s telling you to bring it in to us for service quickly. When your brakes aren’t working right, a light comes on that looks like a circle with a pair of half circles at the sides and an exclamation mark in the middle. Driving with malfunctioning brakes is dangerous, and it’s another warning light that should prompt you to get your vehicle looked at very soon. If you see a light on your dash you don’t understand, try looking it up in your owner’s manual or bring it into us so we can help decipher it. Warning lights are there to help you, and so are we. Hans Imports Full Stop (Brake Master Cylinder Replacement)Posted November 23, 2025 1:29 AMWhen you step on your brake pedal, you want to feel confident that your vehicle’s going to stop. If your brakes aren’t working right, it’s a risk to your safety and the safety of others on the road. After all, you’re driving a machine that weighs thousands of pounds, and you have to be able to stop that big machine quickly and with control, especially with some of the speeds you travel on the highways. The heart of your vehicle’s brake system is the master cylinder. When you apply the brakes, the master cylinder has pistons, springs, and brake fluid. That fluid amplifies and distributes the force of your foot through brake lines to calipers at all your wheels. Those calipers squeeze down on rotors or discs, which is what slows down and stops your vehicle. For safety, a master cylinder has two cylinders, one for two wheels, and the other for the remaining two wheels. That way, if there is a failure in one, you’ll still have braking power at half your wheels. The master cylinder doesn’t last forever, of course, and here are some signs it may have problems. When you press on the brake pedal, it feels soft and spongy. You may see the brake light on your instrument panel go on. You may notice brake fluid leaking, or it may be discolored. All of those are signs of brakes that need attention, and among the possible culprits is a master cylinder that has failed. When you bring it in for a technician to look at, they’ll check not only the master cylinder but also the rest of the components, such as pads, discs, shoes, brake lines, and hoses. If your master cylinder needs replacing, we’ll make sure all the other parts meet the manufacturer’s specs as well. Brakes are important. Really important. Full stop. Hans Imports Rubber Match (Tire Replacement)Posted November 16, 2025 1:16 AMA set of new tires isn't probably high on anyone's list of exciting purchases. But since your life is literally riding on them, it's probably a good idea to know when it's time for you to buy new ones. If you've been feeling your vehicle slipping more in wet weather or it takes a longer distance to stop, those are a couple of signs you may need new rubber all around. Here's how to make your decision. First thing to do is look at your tires. The surface of the tire that contacts the road is the tread. When that tire was new, the tread was deep (the grooves in the rubber that provide traction). If they're starting to look somewhat smooth, you have a seriously worn tire that definitely needs replacing. Bring your vehicle in for us to look at your tires and we can check your tread with a tread gauge. Also look at the sides of your tires. If they have cuts or cracks in them, or if you see signs of bulges or scrapes made by hitting curbs or potholes, those could be signs of serious damage. Keep an eye on your tire pressure monitors. If you notice one or more of your tires showing frequent pressure changes, that needs to be checked out. One other thing you probably didn't know is that your tires all have birthdays, and they're printed on each sidewall. When you bring your vehicle in for us to inspect your tires, we can tell you how old they are. That's important because rubber deteriorates with age, even if they don’t have that many miles on them. Tire manufacturers recommend replacing tires when they reach a certain age, usually from six to ten years old. Now the question is, which tires should you buy? That's one for your service adviser who can recommend replacements based on your driving style, the model of vehicle you own, where you drive most often, and other factors. Oh, and if you want your new set of tires to last as long as possible, remember to have them rotated regularly, keep the right pressure, and don't drive aggressively. Hans Imports In That Case? (Transfer Case Exchange)Posted November 9, 2025 1:15 AMEver wonder how all-wheel-drive or 4-wheel-drive vehicles get the power from the engine to the front and rear wheels? The magic happens in what's called a transfer case. In some all-wheel-drive vehicles, it's sometime called a power take-off unit, or PTU. Inside the transfer case is a set of gears. And to keep those gears meshing smoothly, they have to be lubricated and kept cool. What does that is called transfer case fluid. Depending on your vehicle's type of transfer case, it is filled with either an automatic transmission fluid, a gear oil that's a bit thicker or transfer case fluid designed to be use for your transfer case. As happens with all lubricating fluids, the transfer case fluid has things in it that break down the older they get. They have corrosion inhibitors, detergents and anti-foaming agents that keep the lubricant from getting air bubbles in it. Transfer cases don't have filters in them to clean out impurities. If you don't have your transfer case fluid exchanged for fresh, you risk damage to the case, and that can run into thousands of dollars. So the wise driver makes sure the fluid is changed according to the manufacturer's recommendations. For many vehicles, that is every 30,000 mi/50,000 km, but some require it more frequently. Your vehicle service facility can advise you on what your vehicle's optimal interval is. During the fluid exchange, any metal filings that may have come off are cleaned off of the drain and fill plugs that are usually magnetized to catch the stray metal pieces. If you hear grinding noises coming from under your vehicle or if it is having trouble shifting gears or going in and out of 4-wheel-drive, those could be signs your transfer case needs service. In that case, have our technicians check it out. The best plan of action? Keep your transfer case fluid maintained and it should keep you heading down the road for years to come.
